Car electronics supplier Delphi Automotive Plc went coast-to-coast in 2015 in a self-driving Audi Q5 sport-utility vehicle to prove the autonomous automobile had arrived.
Now, Delphi is shifting from stunts to selling. In Las Vegas this week at CES, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, the company will give test rides to hundreds of potential customers in driverless Audis over a course of rugged terrain and tunnels. A new study from the University of Iowa College of Public Health has found that traffic accidents involving farm vehicles in the Midwest would decrease by more than 50 percent if state policies required more lighting and reflection on those vehicles.
The study by the college’s Great Plains Center for Agricultural Health (GPCAH) compared rates of farm equipment–related crashes in nine Midwestern states in the context of the states’ policies on lighting and marking vehicles. Those states report an average of more than 1,100 farm vehicle-related crashes each year, often causing severe or fatal injuries. Continue reading

Six of the 10 ports at greatest risk for catastrophe loss in the world are in the United States, Newark, California-based catastrophe modeler Risk Management Solutions Inc. said Monday, and warned that the risk extends to smaller ports.
RMS said the two riskiest ports are in Nagoya, Japan, with an estimated catastrophe loss of $2.3 billion and Guangzhou, China, with an estimated cat loss of $2 billion. Continue reading
