Self-driving cars hold the promise of saving thousands of lives each year on U.S. roads. But does pointing out flaws with the technology effectively put people in danger?
That claim was put forth last week by Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, who criticized the media for harping on the relatively few crashes involving Tesla’s semi-autonomous driving system called Autopilot, while saying little about the about the 1.2 million people who die worldwide each year in human-driven vehicles. Most of us are familiar with the normal type of incidences that claims arise from. We know what typical home & auto insurance policies cover. Your having home catches on fire. Covered. You’re teaching your teenage son to drive and he rear-ends the neighbor’s car. Covered. Your aunt runs into your home with her car because she is having trouble with depth perception. Covered. With the holidays and winter fast approaching there are many things to think about when it comes to your personal insurance policies. Do you know what your homeowners and automobile policy cover? Are you insured if your home floods? Are you insured if you are in an automobile accident when driving someone’s vehicle? Are you insured for unexpected events? Continue reading →
The new U.S. policy on self-driving cars received a mixed reaction from highway-safety advocates who acknowledged the life-saving potential though warned of a world of “human guinea pigs.”
The Transportation Department’s new guidelines give carmakers and states “the green light to innovate while keeping safety at the forefront,” said Deborah Hersman, president and chief executive officer of the National Safety Council, an Itasca, Illinois-based nonprofit that seeks to reduce injuries and deaths on the road. Well we have survived the first few weeks of back to school. Many children and parents may need to rethink safety when it comes to school time. Does your child walk to school, ride the bus, bike, or get dropped off? However your child gets to school, discussing back to school safety is a must. Continue reading →
The rollout of autonomous vehicles over the next few decades could lead to a massive reduction in U.S. motor vehicle premiums in the coming years, Aon Benfield said in a new report.
Expectations are that “industry pure premiums” will drop 20 percent under their 2015 levels by 2035, even if the technology is adopted at just a moderate pace, Aon Benfield said. Assuming the same moderate trajectory, those premiums could plunge by more than 40 percent if full adoption of autonomous vehicles takes place, as expected, by 2050. Continue reading →
Across the globe, car accidents remain the number one killer of children. While safety measures, such as car seats and seat belts, have come a long way still more can be done to protect the little people of the world. A study By Safe Ride 4 kids found that 33% of children involved in automobile accidents were NOT restrained. That is a scary statistic about children not being protected by an easy seat belt restraint or car seat. Continue reading →
The rejection of a $100 million settlement with drivers comes with plenty of silver linings for Uber Technologies Inc. The gray cloud for the ride-hailing company is that a dozen or so lawsuits that would have been silenced may now roll back in.
A San Francisco federal judge concluded the deal was unfair in large part because it undervalued potential labor code violations under California’s unique bounty-hunter law, known as PAGA. The settlement sought to sweep under the rug lawsuits with potentially billions of dollars in claims under the law, which gives workers the right to step into the shoes of the state labor secretary to bring enforcement actions. Self-driving trucking start-up Otto is poised to put its software in the hands of long-haul truckers by the end of this year for testing, its co-founders said on Thursday.
Otto, co-founded by Google car and map project veterans Anthony Levandowski and Lior Ron, will also begin testing five retrofitted Volvo trucks at Northern California’s autonomous vehicle testing grounds, GoMentum Station, in coming weeks. Continue reading →
